Wushan county is located in the northeast part of Chongqing, and has long been regarded as the eastern gate of Chongqing. The county lies where the Daning River merges into the Yangtze River. Cruising upstream along the Yangtze River from the county for 480 km (298 miles), you will reach Chongqing City. The famous Three Gorges Dam is located 124 km (77 miles) away from the county on the Yangtze River.
It has a long history and abounds with rich resources. Of the counties of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, Wushan has the most cultural relics and historic sites, over 40 historic sites and one thousand rare cultural relics in all.Of the cultural relics in this county, the Ancient Plank Road and the Suspended Coffins are well-known.
Besides boasting a long history, Wushan takes pride in its natural scenery. As Wushan traverses the whole part of Wu Gorge and most of Qutang Gorge, it combines many landscapes of the two gorges of Yangtze River. Among these are the twelve peaks of Wushan along the two banks of Wu Gorge. The Goddess Peak is the most prominent and has many beautiful legends.
Wushan has been visited by numerous poets who wrote works praising its scenery. It is not only the cradle of Daxi Culture and Bachu Culture but also that of Goddess Culture and Wu Culture.

The scenic area of Shennv Stream is a newly-developed scenic area with the construction of Three Gorges Project. It’s literally named “Goddess Stream”. It's located on the southern bank of Wu Gorge, 20 kilos from Wushan County. Shennv Stream is 15 kilometers long. Due to the perpendicular mountains, deep valleys and turbulent water, very few people reaches this area, so as the sceneries in it are still in a pristine state, thus worth visiting while you are cruising along the magnificent Yangtze Three Gorges.
A small motor boat will take you to the mysterious region. There are lots of beautiful natural sightseeing's. Some of them are so vivid that you would never believe.
Feifeng Peak of Shennv Stream ', Feifeng Peak is 740 meters in height, locating on the west bank of Shennv Stream. It stretches from the west to the east like a Feifeng (phoenix) flying in the sky and is about to drink the water in the stream. It is said that Shennv (the Goddess of the stream) changed a golden phoenix into a peak and left it in the WuGorge which became a beautiful scenery.
Shangsheng Peak of Shennv Stream ', Shangsheng Peak is 780 meters in height, standing on the east bank of Shennv Stream. "Shangsheng" means rising and flying upwards. Shangsheng Peak is steep and towering with one corner leaning upward just like a bird flying to the cloud, thus obtaining its name. Besides, the peak looks like an eagle flying to the sky and the local people also call it Eagle Peak.
Jingtan Peak of Shennv Stream ', Jingtan Peak is 1020 meters in height, lying on the south bank of Shennv Stream. Among many mountains towers the Jingtan Peak, which is like one camel standing among a flock of sheep.The shape of the peak is similar to a celestial being sitting on the altar and reading Buddhist sutras. Under the peak is a pond with clear water and slight ripples. On the peak lies a big flat just like an altar on the dragon palace. That is how it gets its name.
Jiaoding Peak of Shennv Stream ', Jiaoding Peak lies opposite to the Jingtan Peak. "Jiao" means a sedan. The Jiaoding Peak looks like a sedan in the ancient times, thus obtaining its name.
Shouzhang Peak of Shennv Stream ', "Shouzhang" represents a palm. Shouzhang Peak gets its name because it is similar to the palm of Buddha Sakyamuni.
Sleeping Beauty of Shennv Stream ', The Sleeping Beauty is a stone standing at the mouth of the Shennv Stream. It is like a sleeping beauty lying on her side with her head facing the right. It is very vivid and amazing.
Wushanyun of Shennv Stream ', Wushanyun is a view found in recent years. Looking up at the steep precipice on the southeast of Shangsheng Peak, you can see three characters, "Wushanyun". These "handwriting" is not written by human's hand. Instead, it is in fact the masterpiece of nature. There characters are in brown yellow color on the caesious precipice. What is more magnificent is that the three characters can be read the same-Wushanyun, no matter you read them from the left to the right or from the right to the left. This is really astonishing.
Weiren Peak of Shennv Stream ', Weiren means great men. The Weiren Peak of Shennv Stream is also discovered in recent years. It stands in the scenic area of Jingtan Peak. Weiren Peak looks like Mao Zedong-the founder and the first chairman of People's Republic of China. The peak faces the north, just like Mao Zedong is gazing at the gorges, lakes and Shennv (Goddess of Shennv Stream) in the distance.
